Sometimes God writes stories we never see coming.
What started as a fun weekend getaway to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday in Denver turned into a series of “coincidences” that could only be explained by God’s hand at work. From a random concert conversation to a business opportunity that would change our lives, we soon realized that God was weaving a plan far greater than our own.
We were in Denver, Colorado for my best friend’s 40th birthday with a group of friends — husbands and wives all together — ready for a fun weekend and a concert. During the show, we ended up sitting in front of a couple we’d never met. We started chatting and quickly realized they were from Sisters, Oregon.
That immediately caught our attention because Garrett and I actually got married in Sisters, and both of our families are originally from nearby Prineville where we grew up. It felt like such a small-world moment.
As the conversation went on, the man mentioned that he owned a construction company in Sisters. Garrett has worked in civil construction for over 11 years, so naturally they got to talking. Then he said something that stuck with us — he wished he could find someone to take over his business because he was ready to retire.
A few minutes later, they realized they were actually in the wrong seats and had to move a few rows back. We laughed, said goodbye, and went back to enjoying the concert — but the encounter stayed on our minds.
After the concert, Garrett’s friend Mitch joked, “So, Kacey, how would you feel about moving back to Central Oregon?” Without hesitation, I said, “Never!” I had lived in Reno for 11 years, and after nearly a decade, I finally felt like I had community and roots. The idea of moving just wasn’t on my radar.
Coincidence or Not
But over the next few weeks, Garrett couldn’t stop thinking about it. The whole thing — the wrong seats, the timing, the conversation — felt too intentional to be coincidence. Eventually, he asked me how I felt about him calling the man. I told him to go ahead.

That one phone call led to a few more, and soon Garrett and Mitch decided to drive up to Oregon to meet in person. I was still in denial that this could actually turn into something, but God was clearly moving.
Within a few months, we realized this was real. Garrett and Mitch were given the opportunity to buy the business, and we knew God was opening a door we hadn’t even been looking for. So we listed our home in Reno, and I started praying. I kept telling Garrett, “It’s going to be okay. I’m praying God will send us a cash offer.”
Answered Prayer
The first weekend our home was listed on a Sunday afternoon, after a weekend of showings but no offers, there was a knock at our door. A woman stood there and said she had seen our house for sale. She told us she was a cash buyer and asked if she could take a look at our home. We called our realtor, said yes and arranged for our realtor to show her our house an hour later.
While she was still inside, our agent called and said she wanted to buy it. Eighteen days later, we closed.
From meeting a random couple in the wrong seats at a concert in Denver to a cash buyer literally knocking on our door, it was clear — God was orchestrating every detail. Even when I wasn’t ready, He was already preparing the way.
Back In Oregon
Now, 12 months later, we’re back in Central Oregon. It’s been over 15 years since we’ve lived here, and so much has changed — yet somehow, it still feels like home. We’re trusting God’s plan with our path, praying for community, and praying for success in Garrett and Mitch’s new business.
It’s amazing to look back and see how God’s plan unfolds in ways we could never imagine — reminding us that His timing and His purpose are always perfect.
